THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at McGill University is located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The Earth and Planetary Sciences represent a broad discipline that applies the principles of physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology to the study of planetary processes and environments.

The Earth and Planetary Sciences provide a diverse range of career opportunities to university graduates. Earth scientists are very much involved in the new and expanding fields of environmental management, toxic and radioactive waste disposal, oceanography, and the prediction and monitoring of natural hazards.

There remains a strong demand for geologists and geophysicists in their traditional roles in the search for mineral, energy and water resources. This diversity will expand in the future to include mineral exploration and exploitation of the sea floor and neighbouring terrestrial planets.

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at McGill offers graduate programs at the level of Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Science and a Graduate Diploma. The Department offers an undergraduate program that is scientifically rigorous while at the same time reflecting this diversity of career opportunities.
